The New York State Department of Health advises private-well owners to test at least once a year for bacteria, every three to five years for other contaminants, and sooner after disinfection, flooding, a significant event, or when water changes in taste, odor, color, or clarity.

When to test right away
Don’t wait for the annual schedule when floodwater reached the well, the cap was damaged or opened, the pump or plumbing was repaired, the well was disinfected, water became cloudy or odorous, several people became ill with similar symptoms, a septic failure occurred nearby, fuel or chemicals may have reached the area, a vulnerable occupant will use the water, or the property changed ownership with incomplete records.
If testing indicates unsafe water, follow the laboratory and health department’s instructions — this may include using an alternate water source until follow-up testing confirms the result.
Use the right laboratory and sample method
Sampling errors can create misleading results. Use a laboratory approved for the requested analysis and follow its bottle, timing, temperature, and delivery instructions — choose the specified tap, don’t touch the inside of the bottle or cap, fill to the stated level, record date/time/location, and deliver within the allowed holding time. Do not invent your own sampling procedure; bacteria, metals, and volatile chemicals require different containers and methods.
What should a private well be tested for?
Bacteria
Total coliform and E. coli help identify possible contamination pathways. A positive result needs prompt follow-up under health guidance.
Nitrate
Relevant near septic systems, agriculture, or fertilizer use — especially important for infant health.

Flooding and well contamination
After floodwater reaches a well: do not assume it’s safe because it looks clear; follow state and local health instructions for alternate water use; inspect the well and electrical equipment for damage; arrange disinfection when appropriate; test after disinfection using required timing; continue alternate water use until acceptable follow-up results are confirmed. Boiling may address some biological risks but does not remove many chemical contaminants — follow event-specific health guidance.
Buying a rural property with a private well
Before closing: locate the well and septic system, obtain drilling/pump/treatment/lab records, test water with a suitable purchase-related panel, check pressure and pump operation, ask about dry-season yield, inspect treatment equipment history, confirm which fixtures receive treated water, and locate the main shutoff and electrical disconnect. A home inspection may not automatically include a full water test, well-yield test, or septic assessment — define the scope in writing.
