What does “9 to 10 grains per gallon” mean?
Water hardness is commonly reported in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. A softener exchanges hardness minerals for sodium or potassium ions — it does not automatically remove every contaminant. A carbon or sediment filter does not meaningfully soften water unless specifically designed to.
