Start with the hot-water demand
List the fixtures and equipment that may run at the same time: showers, sinks, dishwasher, clothes washer, restaurant fixtures, or recirculation systems. For a tank system, the discussion includes first-hour delivery and recovery. For tankless, it includes combined gallons per minute at the required temperature rise.
Two households with the same number of people can use hot water very differently. Size to the pattern, not only the bedroom count.
Why Jamestown’s winter inlet temperature matters
A water heater must raise incoming cold water to the set delivery temperature — the colder the incoming water, the greater the temperature rise. Jamestown BPU reports water averages about 54°F to 57°F, with average January water around 46°F. A tankless system serving winter demand must be sized for that colder inlet condition, not just summer performance.

Energy use and efficiency
Tankless units avoid the standby heat loss of keeping a large tank hot. U.S. Department of Energy guidance says demand water heaters can be about 24% to 34% more energy efficient than conventional storage units in homes using 41 gallons or less of hot water daily. Savings vary with use, energy prices, and installation.
Higher efficiency doesn’t automatically create a short payback — compare installed cost, expected energy use, local rates, maintenance, and any needed gas, electric, venting, or plumbing upgrades. Avoid a savings promise based only on a national percentage.

Hard water and maintenance

A tankless heat exchanger may need periodic descaling based on manufacturer, water conditions, temperature, and use. A storage tank may collect sediment and need appropriate maintenance. One unit may not be the best arrangement for every building. Larger homes, restaurants, hospitality properties, and commercial facilities may need multiple tankless units staged together, storage combined with high recovery, recirculation, point-of-use equipment, or redundancy so one failure doesn’t stop all service.
